Finances, Burnout and Medicine

I had the pleasure of talking with Dr. Nii Darko, DO who is an acute care trauma surgeon in addition to co-host along side his wife, Dr. Renee Darko, called Docs Outside the Box. He shed light on working locums and why they, as a couple, have decided to stick to a road less traveled. Though they have to figure out their own health insurance, savings, retirement, they also have control over their schedule. When they want to work, they work. When they don’t, well, they are not working in the hospital but doing other things. As Dr. Serene Shereef discussed in a previous episode, Dr. Darko outlined many benefits.

-Autonomy!! Work on your time. “My time is my most valuable resource,” as he said.

He also brought up several great points. Understand debt versus income from be beginning in medical school. Spend the money for a contract lawyer. Place that ‘consult’.

-Advocate for yourself. Increase physician satisfaction. Mental health for physicians must be addressed.
