Spirituality and Bringing the Authentic Self into the Exam Room with Dr. Haidar Al-Hakim

I sat down again and had a chat with Dr. Haidar Al-Hakim [The ThirdEyeDoc], who is an Ophthalmologist, psychotherapist, author, and host of the Surgical Spirit Podcast. He previously had discussed his personal experience with burnout in a previous episode, and mentioned his interest in the spiritual side, and at that point I knew I had to bring him back for another round of discussion!

Medicine is based on scientific principles, but there is also an art to taking a history of a human being, performing a physical exam, then formulating an assessment and plan [hypothesis] on A HUMAN BEING! And in that being, we are all spiritual. It does not matter the religion, the walk of life, age, or gender. As we physicians, who are human first, embrace the spiritual side, it is possible to look at the whole person [ourselves or others], as spirituality is part of a holistic approach. We as clinicians can etch it into our practice of medicine, embrace our authentic selves, and enjoy a richer dialog with patients/ richer connection from one being to another.

It is a practice. It is a process. Start somewhere, continue, enrich, enjoy!
